Movement for Change

News from Rev'd Chris Lewis:

"Owen Smith, the Shadow Welsh Secretary, called for a Welsh group photo at the Movement for Change Meeting, the biggest fringe meeting at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester. Wales was well represented at the celebration of people from all over the UK taking practical political initiatives and Wales was prominent. There were people there from St Mellons and Bute Town who has taken action on local issues. Swansea was represented by Dennis Greenall Manager of LASA Credit Union, front row left, 15-year old Ffion Price Head Girl of Cefn Hengoed School and Revd Chris Lewis, back row behind Mr Smith. The Swansea trio spoke about their support for the Swansea Bay Fair Credit Campaign. The campaign has been highlighting the suffering caused by high interest lending such as payday lending and was instrumental in the Chancellor's decision to cap rates of interest, the highest of which has approached 6,000% APR. The Swansea campaigners have moved on to promote credit union membership, saving through payroll deduction and access to low interest loans and junior banks in schools which are backed by the credit union and run by the pupils themselves. Ffion, who is also a member of a youth drake group at Mount Zion, Bonymaen, spoke emphatically about her support for the scheme.

Chris said,"Speaking to an audience is all in day's work for Dennis and I but Ffion's courage and confidence made us proud and carried weight with the 300 plus audience. This campaign is about justice and in a quest for justice I would encourage Christians to take their faith and principles into the public realm."
